Pancreatinum

Pancreatin

Extract of the pancreas of cattle or sheep

in 1 remedy

A sarcode made from animal pancreas, traditionally used in homoeopathy in connection with the pancreas, heavy, sluggish digestion and loose stools.

Pancreatinum is pancreatin, an extract of the pancreas of cattle or sheep. The pancreas is a gland behind the stomach that pours digestive enzymes into the gut and makes hormones that manage blood sugar. Pancreatin carries those enzymes and is used in ordinary medicine to help digest food.

In homoeopathy it belongs to the sarcodes, remedies made from healthy animal glands and tissues. Homoeopaths traditionally associate it with the pancreas and its share in digestion: heavy, sluggish digestion, especially of fatty food, and loose stools. Older writers also mention it for gouty joints.
