The berries of the common hedgerow hawthorn, long regarded in herbal and homoeopathic tradition as a gentle tonic for the heart and circulation.

Hawthorn is a thorny shrub or small tree of the rose family, common in European hedgerows, with white or pink blossom in spring and clusters of small dark red berries, known as haws, in autumn. The homoeopathic tincture is made from the ripe berries.

In both herbal and homoeopathic tradition it is regarded as a gentle tonic for the heart and circulation. The old books also describe it for tiredness and shortness of breath on slight effort, nervous irritability, and restless, broken sleep.
